The "problem" of desalination is overexaggerated. You state a lot or large figures, but don't seem to put them in contrast with others. My point is, the best reverse osmosis plants consume about 3 kWh/m^3 of electricity which is nothing. Why? The average person in the US or Europe consumes a few 100 liters per day, so that's somewhere around 1-2 kWh/person/day if ALL our water comes directly from the plant. Which it never does. Water is recycled, artificially or naturally, and places that need desalination only use it to cope with evaporation. So you're looking at much less than 1 kWh/person/day. Now how much is that? The average US or North European citizen consumes about 50 kWh of electricity per day (very roughly), so desalination would probably be less than 1% of that. The same calculations can be done for cost. Same story. Overexaggerated.

@Cloxxki You tesla fanatics are really something. Tesla wasn't some super genius that knew better than anyone today. He was wrong with so many things. The man didn't even believe in electrons ffs. His ideas of wireless transmission were based on inductance and electricity transport via the ground, BOTH of which exist today. The biggest problems are the efficiency and short range of the inductance based transmission, while ground based transmission still requires one cable and causes much quicker rusting of metal pipes in the ground. It's funny how you people who are excessively championing Tesla, making him seem like a God among men, are always the ones with a serious lack of knowledge in engineering and physics. Any reasonable person with basic understanding of physics would see Tesla as an important inventor, but who was wrong in a lot of ways. And that's fine. Have you ever tried being reasonable?
