The M1 Garand was a game changer. The Axis powers were still issuing bolt action rifles. The M1 Garand (and the carbine version) didn't require a GI to lose and re-acquire his target. This, the Jeep, and VT fuses, cut years off of WWII, not to mention the atom bomb. In the late 1970s-early 1980s, I worked with many WWII vets in a steel mill. Despite the "No Nuke" fad at that time, they said that the atom bomb was the greatest invention ever, because they were sitting on a ship waiting to invade the Japanese home islands. After Hiroshima and Nagasaki, this became a moot point. They only had to perform Occupation duties instead of killing schoolchildren armed with bamboo spears. The anniversary date of the atom bomb attacks on Japan are coming up in a few days. I'm fully prepared to defend the USA's positions. 1. Don't start wars of aggression. 2. If you start wars of aggression, don't lose. 3. If you lose, don't expect mercy. That being said, Japan receieved mercy. As MacArthur said, "Send me more food or more ammunition". Now, Japan is a steadfast ally against the looming conflict with China, and Germany is an ally against Russia.
