It's fact that soviets prevented people from leaving with penalty of death and well recorded one at that. They even build wall precisely for that reason. It's also objective fact that once the people inside saw from TV and radio how things really were in capitalism, they rebelled against system and communism fell. It's also a fact that most powerful nation on the planet is USA instead of any communistic nation. Also average GDP per capita is more in every western country.
