You clearly don't understand. It's not matter of taste or utility but matter of investment. The stuff that they buy maintains their value or even increases it over time. Thus if there is need to liquefy wealth then they just sell them.

@seigeengine There isn't much of market for housing that expensive? You kidding me right? How do you expect them to be so expensive in the first place if there is no market for them. There is lot of market for houses like this, that is why housing markets are solid investments most of the time. This is maybe for you to hard to understand but at certain threshold cheap houses aren't worth of time to invest in. Especially since you generally have to take care of your investment and follow it. So for rich people it's better to invest in expensive houses than for some poor houses where at most they get like 100 dollars profit per sale.
