"Just build a good national train net" That is way, way, way, way harder than you insinuate it is. It could have been easy if we just collectively decided that is what we would do, but as that won't happen it won't happen. Self driving cars does only have technology as a barrier, and tech only barriers are broken all the time. All the time. This is only a question about time.

Personally I don't worry about Starlink, I worry about Kuiper
6
these are so close to Earth that it doesn't that that many years for things to de-orbit.
2
nice premise.
2
"Kessler Syndrome that some are saying is already beginning to take effect." That is because some less caring countries shoot down satellites in high orbits though, not because of low earth orbit com sats. "if there was a way to take care of obsolete or broken satellites beyond "hoping they fall out of orbit and at worst land in the ocean without hitting anything else"" They take care of themselves when they are that low in LEO, and they are designed to burn up in the atmosphere, so it doesn't matter where they de-orbit. "but not at the cost of our own ability to look at the stars and actually be able to reach other planets and distant locations in space." If those up there today doesn't stop you from doing that, they won't in the future.
2
great video I usually find there to be too much bloat in these kind of videos but this was efficient :).
2
@yw6602 because they haven't demonstrated that they care as much.
2
expensive is still better than impossible.
2
@sarjulia "Have you ever considered that there are millions of people who would like to maintain their night skies free of the light pollution that these satellites produce?" Have you ever considered that you are exaggerating the problem? The night sky will be free, you won't see any of these satellites at night. If you want to be snarky, at least be educated.
1
@sarjulia you claim that you can, but can you? Methinks you have seen an airplane :).
1
out of curiosity, do you ever cook your own food? :D
1
@varuntammewar6582 you don't think you should eat out more? People's jobs rely on it.
1
@varuntammewar6582 talking about irrelevant differences doesn't refute my point.
1
@varuntammewar6582 I have no agenda, so you trying to force one upon me is not a good thing. I am helping you make a better argument by pointing out a flaw in it. If you want to continue making a flawed argument, go right ahead.
1
@varuntammewar6582 I didn't say what you said was untrue, I was it was a flawed argument. Mathematically speaking, not creating a job and taking a job away has the same end result, one job less.Pointing out the irrelevant differences is irrelevant when it is about the core issue, reducing the economy by doing something yourself or not. If you actually tried to understand my point it would be easier for you. Not sure why you don't.
1
@fatbasterd5195 it's a good joke, but not even a small risk.
1
the term iPhone itself is incorrectly used. I have never had an iPhone, but you can bet your a** that I have a phone that can use the internet and cost 100 bucks.
1
I don't feel comfortable crossing the road when a human driven car comes in. I only walk when the car decelerates.
1
it is working as intended in Ukraine, both for civil and military use. "SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell said that every Starlink satellite that is launched in the future will be equipped with laser terminals, starting with the next launch in about three weeks. " was written 8 months ago.
1
@sevilnatas I responded to what you said / answered your questions. If I knew you were this confrontational I'd give you this quote instead: "Shotwell confirmed SpaceX’s previous statements that the polar-orbiting satellites, which will fly in a north-south track around Earth, will have inter-satellite laser links. The laser communication terminals were aboard the 10 Starlink satellites launched into a polar orbit Jan. 24." I didn't think you'd care that much about ultimate proof since you were satisfied with just writing "... some say it is not likely to ever work as described."
1
but China is not going to be happy if Russia actually uses it.
1
4:26 heyyyy, you skipped the prosthaphaeresis and logarithms part :P.
1
reminds me of the "pro bono" concept :).
1
I don't think that is going away. Amish people are still taking the horse and buggy on the modern roads today, because they want to. It would probably be more restricted though I guess.
1
if you don't see them today, you won't see them in the future.
1
@camilaoroza the satellites.
1
@camilaoroza how do you know it is them and not something else?
1
better could be more reliable or more bandwidth I guess.
1
being tightly packed with a lot of other people is not generally a good thing though.
1
I thought dr Mike was the dick guy from survivor :P
1
the problem with public transport is that it is not very flexible. For the system to work, you need to drive huge buses with just a few people in it, and that isn't efficient. Being constricted in movement by rail or path of whatever is also limiting, while the self driving is only limited by safety, which will become an advantage as soon as self driving is more safe than human driving.
1
@Simply_Emu trams and trains only work for mass transit, not for extensive public transport. If you need to move 4 people from point A to point B, a massive train is not going to be the most efficient. I am Swedish and don't have a driver's license, so I rely on public transport not just for going to massive city 1 to massive city 2, but from rural town of 5000 to rural village of 50 to the farm where I grew up (no train tracks here, not even asphalt on the road).
1
it is still awesome.
1
I guess that is why communism won over capitalism. Oh, wait...
1
15:20 yeah you dolt, we need to spend more money on defense.. and we need to use it
1
3:23 this was very exciting to see live, but it would have been even more exciting to follow the decision making process, so see what the ref sees.
1
the energy usage has to be tailored to the generation as well. If generation is intermittent, we should design our usage to be that as well.
1
@epgui "manual transmission cars were all but eliminated" Hello from Europe.
1
@sarjulia the sky won't be cluttered. You just say that to boost your ego.
1
"Shotwell confirmed SpaceX’s previous statements that the polar-orbiting satellites, which will fly in a north-south track around Earth, will have inter-satellite laser links. The laser communication terminals were aboard the 10 Starlink satellites launched into a polar orbit Jan. 24."
1
@CaptainScuwr I don't think you contest what she is saying. She talks about "could".
1
6:22 how can you be conflicted? You are completely dismissing the skills of the person who put him in off side.
1
so Tesla Bot comes before Tesla FSD? :)
1
you don't need to have just one person in a self driving car...
1
100%
1
the night sky is not affected.
1
@sarjulia yes, and I see airplanes.
1
6:45 he shouldn't have been so close to the edge. That people complain about perfect calls is why I am done with sports. It is unintelligent entertainment for unintelligent people.
1
that sentiment has lost so many times through history though.
1
@aronseptianto8142 the "well that won't work, lets focus on current tech instead" sentiment.
1
@aronseptianto8142 "... if the "current tech" is cheaper, more convenient and more reliable, what's to hate?" No hate, I am just a realist. If the current tech is perfectly fine, why do you think it is not being implemented? Could it be that there is difficulty in implementing it? Why FSD is exciting is because it is so easy to implement if the tech becomes viable. "even if full self driving is possible, i don't think it'll ever match the efficiency of rolling steel on steel." It is more efficient if you want to move 4 people from point A to B, it is a question of scale. What you want to have is a combination of transportation modes that work well together, small things for small transportation and big things for big transportation.
1
"Young adults driving two-ton vehicles on the highway is not barbaric, it is freeing." You still have the same freedom with self driving cars, and it is not freeing being the casualty of an accident.
1
things in LEO doesn't stay in LEO.
1
I recall discussing things like this back in the days, and I lost all interest (almost) in sports as all the sports people were against these kind of things.
