"Just build a good national train net" That is way, way, way, way harder than you insinuate it is. It could have been easy if we just collectively decided that is what we would do, but as that won't happen it won't happen. Self driving cars does only have technology as a barrier, and tech only barriers are broken all the time. All the time. This is only a question about time.

expensive is still better than impossible.

out of curiosity, do you ever cook your own food? :D

@varuntammewar6582 you don't think you should eat out more? People's jobs rely on it.

@varuntammewar6582 talking about irrelevant differences doesn't refute my point.
1
@varuntammewar6582 I have no agenda, so you trying to force one upon me is not a good thing. I am helping you make a better argument by pointing out a flaw in it. If you want to continue making a flawed argument, go right ahead.

@varuntammewar6582 I didn't say what you said was untrue, I was it was a flawed argument. Mathematically speaking, not creating a job and taking a job away has the same end result, one job less.Pointing out the irrelevant differences is irrelevant when it is about the core issue, reducing the economy by doing something yourself or not. If you actually tried to understand my point it would be easier for you. Not sure why you don't.

I don't feel comfortable crossing the road when a human driven car comes in. I only walk when the car decelerates.
1
I don't think that is going away. Amish people are still taking the horse and buggy on the modern roads today, because they want to. It would probably be more restricted though I guess.

being tightly packed with a lot of other people is not generally a good thing though.

the problem with public transport is that it is not very flexible. For the system to work, you need to drive huge buses with just a few people in it, and that isn't efficient. Being constricted in movement by rail or path of whatever is also limiting, while the self driving is only limited by safety, which will become an advantage as soon as self driving is more safe than human driving.

@Simply_Emu trams and trains only work for mass transit, not for extensive public transport. If you need to move 4 people from point A to point B, a massive train is not going to be the most efficient. I am Swedish and don't have a driver's license, so I rely on public transport not just for going to massive city 1 to massive city 2, but from rural town of 5000 to rural village of 50 to the farm where I grew up (no train tracks here, not even asphalt on the road).

I guess that is why communism won over capitalism. Oh, wait...

@epgui "manual transmission cars were all but eliminated" Hello from Europe.

so Tesla Bot comes before Tesla FSD? :)

you don't need to have just one person in a self driving car...

that sentiment has lost so many times through history though.

@aronseptianto8142 the "well that won't work, lets focus on current tech instead" sentiment.
1
@aronseptianto8142 "... if the "current tech" is cheaper, more convenient and more reliable, what's to hate?" No hate, I am just a realist. If the current tech is perfectly fine, why do you think it is not being implemented? Could it be that there is difficulty in implementing it? Why FSD is exciting is because it is so easy to implement if the tech becomes viable. "even if full self driving is possible, i don't think it'll ever match the efficiency of rolling steel on steel." It is more efficient if you want to move 4 people from point A to B, it is a question of scale. What you want to have is a combination of transportation modes that work well together, small things for small transportation and big things for big transportation.

"Young adults driving two-ton vehicles on the highway is not barbaric, it is freeing." You still have the same freedom with self driving cars, and it is not freeing being the casualty of an accident.
