In the Bible there are several mentions of the oldest son having (and sometimes losing) the right to twice the inheritance that his siblings would get. Another place you can see this division of resources is farmland. Sometimes you’ll see it arranged in thin strips. This happens because long ago someone had a big parcel where one side faced the road or a river, then when they passed it got split up. It wouldn’t be much of a farm without access to that road or river, so they kept slicing the land thinner.
