If you want a $40,000 salary* and you’re holding stocks that pay 4% (plenty of banks and utilities do) you’d need $1,000,000 of principal. The dividend stock will also appreciate a bit, but he’s going to have to repeat this process of casually doubling his “risky” investment hundreds of times. * which would be equivalent to a slightly higher worked income because qualified dividends get preferential tax rates.

Two nice things there: (1) since dividend investing implies buy and hold, you don’t have to constantly be looking for the next opportunity. (2) You don’t have to pick individual companies. There are funds like SCHD that compile a bunch of companies that have continued and increased their dividends over many years, good weather and bad.
