  1. That’s normal, look up the “forgetting curve” if you want to learn more. Hearing something once you’ll retain very little, even just the next day. If you want it to stick you need to review it, frequently at first but eventually a quick refresher is all you need. It also matters how much content you take in at one time. It’s pretty common for avid readers to tear through a 700-page book in a weekend, and I’m sure they had a good experience at the time, but just a few days later they could barely tell you why happened. Spacing that reading out, say 30 minutes day, would improve retention.

  2. The movie is Boyz N the Hood , set and filmed in the Crenshaw neighborhood of South Central Los Angeles* circa 1990. That wasn’t a nice neighborhood by any means, but also the movie intentionally emphasized the poverty and violence. * renamed South Los Angeles in 2003, possibly to escape the outdated image of it essentially being a war zone.
