For Chinese, it's about 'face', showing off how well one is doing.

@Slitheringpeanut agree. However, the chinese has an added dimension of thousands years' old culture of 'face' where 'face' can bring you favors, in this context. How can I get face? I need material wealth to show others that I'm well off and I might offer 🎁 to you. Face and favors go hand in hand, having a merry go round. 😂

@Slitheringpeanut in chinese is '人有我有' 😂

@patrickt49 I totally share your sentiment. The culture of 'face' has two levels: a personal level and a sosial level. First, I have to have it when everyone else have it, that's less harmful. Second level is showing off wealth to exert power, saying if you follow me you will be like me but I want 'gift' from you and I will show you 'good life'. This a short version of how corruption works in CCPchina. While it's ok to accuse CCP providing an excellent environment for corruption but it doesn't start with CCP. This extreme 'face' phenomenon is culturally historically passed down from generations in Asia (including Middle East many Arab countries). In CCPchina it's seen as a social norm that's 'normal' to bribe officials therefore more bribe, more 💰, more power, more face... What I call the merry-go-round 😂

@Enjoymentboy admire your clarity on self-worth 👍

@edwardhernandez8289 Actually. When I have a higher social status, people below me kow-tow to me, give me face. I feel my face is covered in gold 😂 ( I'm being sarcastic here )

@Slitheringpeanut you are right too. There always some subtle differences when you put the general onto certain particular culture. Of course, you won't know it unless you are brought up in that culture.

And Patrick149, thank you for a meaningful exchange of opinions.

@@arisnotheles the face culture is not just about distinguish oneself from others, it's also about power projecting over and above others. Some CCP elites using this to say: I have power, bribe me, you be have good life. Who doesn't want good life? Then, everyone is following this formula to get rich, perhaps? Where as SK plastic culture which makes me laugh because ladies want to be beautifully standing out from their peers then ended up looking more less the same. 😂

kkkrevolution3307 agree. Face culture on an individual level is no big deal. But on a social level, it's harmful to the advancement of a nation bc large amount of wealth going into powerful greedy pockets, much much less left for welfares for all.

@@arisnotheles thank you for clarifying your perspective on modern consumerism. Face culture has a lot to do with acquisition of wealth as to satisfy one's desire to own 'things', since it's not possible to buy what I wanted if I had no money. Power of consumerism in the context of globalization is changing our world to the worse (only my views)
