Christianity quite well allows for separation of church and state (Catholicism perhaps a little less so) and it's no accident that secular humanism saw its rise in Europe. The left is mostly worried that alternative religions get in the way of the worship of the state. There's no way they'd put up with Islam the way they do if they didn't see it as a tool to attack the dominant religion in the west. (Disclaimer: I'm not a Christian).
