  1. A big part of the problem is when the internet moved away from being decentralized to being the purview of huge tech giants. The rise of the alt services is a bit of a rebalancing but it needs to go much further. It's a shame Diaspora never took off but I think the timing was wrong. BitTorrent is an example of something that works well but it's not social media.
