You're going to get a lot of people telling you to read the book. And I'm one of them. You could probably get another video about the differences.

@SumDumGy Bet it didn't. My dad's classical education was much broader than I ever received and he would have been about the right age when this book came out.

@xr6lad I'm only a little younger and we got a little Roman history but not much. I've probably learned more about it since I've been out of school to be honest. Though history was never my subject and I've forgotten much, I think "modern" ideas about teaching history were already coming to bear. I mostly remember getting a lot of stone/bronze age "life experience" type stuff.

@Cyricist001 In the book, it's providing a service to the state. The point being to not exclude anyone who genuinely wants to attain that status. (Note that I'm not explicitly endorsing it, merely discussing how it works in the book). The book also presents that universal franchise already lead to disaster (which is beginning to look fairly realistic).

@Cyricist001 I believe options like working as an orderly in a hospital were mentioned. The point being that citizenship was earned not given for nothing. Note that there were not really any penalties to not being a citizen other than not being able to vote.

@gamingforever9121 Yeah, it's a shame. I don't mind being presented with views that I disagree with but this seems lazy and dishonest to the book. It would probably have been fine as a stand-alone movie. Ah well, that's Hollywood.

@gamingforever9121 But Verhoeven claims he didn't even read the book which is a bit lame.

@gamingforever9121 I had to look up the correct spelling :D

@dirus3142 I don't mind that Verhoeven would make such a move. I also wouldn't mind that he would satirize the content of the book. That he made a movie supposedly based off the book and using its name but didn't make the effort to read the book or represent the nuances of the story is not good and probably precluded a faithful representation of the book being made (though I doubt Hollywood would do it justice anyway).

@orangedream267 I've seen it suggested that WWII was a turf war between national socialists and international socialists.

@Cyricist001 Well, it's just the premise for a sci-fi book so not worth delving into too deeply but the system was set up by military veterans after the collapse of the previous system so I guess the theory is they wouldn't vote for that kind of politician. That's not something I'm going to defend but it's taken as given for the purposes of the book. Also, as said, not being a citizen doesn't carry serious penalties so it's only the civically minded that would apply. Though we have corrupt politicians that have been in the military so I'm sure the cracks would show before too long.

@ItsMrAssholeToYou I heard "Forever War" was supposed to be a lefty answer to Starship Troopers and read it hoping to be challenged but found it mostly pedestrian.
3
@Cyricist001 Nobody is against people giving away their own wealth or property. It's the taking by force that libertarians take issue with.
2
@Cyricist001 Maybe step 1 is for the state to stop taking so much.
2
@Cyricist001 Maybe. That's another discussion though.

@piotrd.4850 Yes.I enjoyed those until he started letting other people write them.

@kalashnikovdevil I think lefty possibly more in terms of being anti-war. Which, sure, is not necessarily a left-only position.
