  1. Show me a PC or tablet with GPIO. The move from ISA to PCI was good for performance but not so great for hobby use. (Edit: Yes, there are add-ons and USB but that just ups cost/complexity). And yes, there are also microcontrollers but it's also kind of nice to be able to do process control, have logs and graphs on a built-in webserver and be able to ssh in if you want to tweak things. There's definitely a niche for these devices.

  2. Hart Henry, not a bad set up but also not a million miles away from accessing the device over the net from a tablet or smartphone with an app or browser. All good options.
