  2. It seems like many people haven't actually looked at what a scrum is supposed to be and just try and use it to have "meetings" without being someone calling stuffy old meetings. I know this is essentially what scrums at my last company were.

  3. I have a developer background but moved to sysadmin. Was asked to look at why the company's main application was running so terribly in QA. Mind you, in production it was running on about 20 clustered servers. It seemed like an app that would run on a single beefy server 15 years previous so I looked into it and the app was making 3000+ SQL queries per page, most of them duplicates. The cause seemed to be injudicious use of un-optimized frameworks as far as I could tell). The developers (too big a department in itself) were regarded as golden children so they just threw more hardware at it every time it got slow and wouldn't tell them to fix their shit. I understand they booted some people but didn't get to the root cause and it still continues to this day. It's still making them boatloads of money so I guess they're happy but it was painful to see.
