google's AI invented a completely new logic gate for me complete with nonsense truth table when I asked it about not-xor. I believe it's actually actively dangerous and it's probably going to cause someone's death eventually (if it hasn't already).

"Ally" is one of those red flag words. If you see it crop up, you know the person using it is only interested in controlling you.
1
I've gotta get off Thunderbird. It's been a long while though. Is Eudora still a thing?
1
No problemX ... Uh, NX ProblemX?
1
@jer1776 Brave is decent but as it's based off Chrome, I am concerned about its long-term viability. We could use a top-to-bottom browser that can remain committed to the values of openness and freedom that were once common currency in the tech world.
1
I should get mine in there. I share it with a couple of mid-level prominent people so that should be fun. Do we have a John Smith out there?
1
alt.folklore.urban used to be good for tracking and debunking (or confirming) urban legends. Snopes got his start putting their faq on the web.
1
@AntiCookieMonster What if they were putting your project's name and logo all over what they were doing? Though I will point out that there's nothing wrong with militias per se but for the sake of this argument, let's assume this one is avowed neo-nazis or something.
1
@JohnCrawford1979 Yes, this is definitely manufactured outrage. This kind of opposition to his thoughts would more traditionally have come from the right but this is definitely leftist activity.
1
An academic sabbatical is typically not a vacation just FWIW.

I think it's any organization above a certain size.

Blue cities.

Wait until you hear about how MS came by the name "Internet Explorer".
1
@itsrickyschannel. Many will but there are many here who were not even born then. I meet people all the time who have no idea how wicked Microsoft has been, they only know of Bill Gates (questionable) 'philanthropy'

Everyone loves a scold.
1
That whole case effectively evaporated when the Bush administration came in. The European stuff had slightly more of an effect but not much.
1
@CrucialFlowResearch You guys seem to agree but you're coming across as dickish.
1
It's not an accident. It's subversion. See "the long walk through the institutions". People haven't been gatekeeping hard enough.
1
Don't the Chinese already have Red Flag Linux or something?
1
It doesn't matter what they run if they're in the landfill where they belong.
1
@glynnec2008 Obama has now been renamed ObamX for inclusivity. Big Mike is still Big Mike.
1
@williamdrum9899 And more besides.
1
@steve55619 If it's just an empty for loop, it is doing nothing and can be optimized away. I've heard of good c compilers doing this.
1
Linus, blink three times if you're being held captive...
1
@DannyBowen25 I'm not talking about terms, I'm talking about how the code was treated.
1
I had a major change of circumstance in 1997 and I would swear that the term was in common use during my previous circumstance (of course, this is purely anecdotal). Google still has a vestigial version of dejanews around (though it is becoming much less useful and searchable over time) so it might be worth a look there.
1
@exotericidymnic3530 Being Russian born certainly is. And moving countries is hard even when not being obstructed, (Well, unless you want to wander in across the southern border of the US, of course).
1
This is not even r-tarded. I think we need an entirely new word.
1
@user-dc9zo7ek5j That doesn't work for long before it demands to check in again.
1
Remember when they broke AT&T up? Yeah...
1
Nice idea. Well, not the systemd part. Not as part of KDE though. Some of us don't use KDE.
1
Welcome to MDS.

@treelineresearch3387 I think calling it a Linux vulnerability was a bit disingenuous too (though granted it did mention it affected other systems too).
1
@edwardcullen1739 Deal. CVSS is flawed.
1
@edwardcullen1739 The deal with calling it a 9.9 (out of 10. I assume it doesn't go to 11) is that that doesn't allow much escalation for anything that would be much more dangerous. Additionally, I note that you're already talking about desktops and laptops which is fine if you're discussing security issues for desktops and laptops. But Linux is much bigger and there are many devices for which a CUPS vulnerability is not even relevant like Android devices, my old Tivo and my document scanner. So again, yes, CVSS is flawed (or at least, something is).
1
@projectsspecial9224 Certainly, if a distro install printing by default, it should be bound to localhost and not be available to all-and-sundry by default. When I think of all the times I ragged on Microsoft for prioritizing convenience over security...
1
Sorry, all my donation money's already gone to Jimmy Wale's yacht this year.
1
Maybe a small country with a shitty extension will rename itself.
1
These people are the same ones who would say they wondered how anyone could go along with what was happening in the late 30s. It's the banality of evil.
1
@nominou6 Don't forget the corporation gets to manage the city because the government is so goddamn awful.
1
And of course, for these kind of people, far-right means anyone that questions the narrative. Even lefties that just aren't totally insane would be advised to avoid this potentially career-destroying trap.
1
@ I remember when PGP was printed as a book to get around export restrictions. Also when the DECSS key was printed as a t-shirt

@user-eg6nq7qt8c “‘Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.’”
1
@christinaapplesauce2459 It could mean a fork licensed such that changes could not be reintegrated to the original.
1
@christinaapplesauce2459 Copyleft is a little different. So things may be a little different if people aren't actively cooperating but simply copying what someone else has written is what I'm pondering. It would need lawyers to look at it, of course.
1
Among many other woke problems, it seems companies feel entitled to use the woke virtue signaling as cover for bad behaviors like invading privacy and selling or stealing (AI) personal data or indulging their foot fetish with minors.
1
I wonder how much of this is their push to have their AIs be woke. They are complex internal systems and messing with them will likely have unexpected consequences.
1
It's tricky because if you are too accepting, you open yourself to subversion which is why so many organizations are woke in the first place where they used to be exactly as you'd wish. So clearly there does need to be a degree of gatekeeping, particularly around the core of the organization. Just ask the Trojans.
