Also worth bearing in mind from Louis' recent videos is that buying a used Tesla means you're closer to that $20k battery replacement fee. That would buy you a very decent new-used car.

@randomman057 Yes, if you're willing and able to settle for less range, it's less expensive. If you can get by with a golf cart, I'm sure it's very cheap indeed.

@EternalLegionGaming Basically a small utility vehicle.

@a.banana OK, now you're speculating. How about actually providing a price for that? There was someone who did the costs calculation and said that 20k was actually a fair price for such a battery pack (the majority naturally being the cells). Bear in mind though that we're not discussing the fairness, simply that it's an expected cost.

This may be because Louis has a recent video about the cost to replace a Tesla battery. Something in the region of 22k, I believe.

I have one too. 47mpg and I've got close to 700 on a tank (and I've heard of people managing that). Just coming up on 300,000 miles. Sadly, it's showing its age. I was actually thinking of a Prius at the time but they were hard to get then I came across the TDIs in my research.

It's simply supply and demand. The market for Teslas (new and used) is not very mature or rational yet.

But Louis is talking about EVs. You're countering with a hybrid. Hybrids solve the problem but are an answer to a different question. While many people do have commutes that would work, they might need longer distances at the weekend to visit family or go to the lake or whatever so the issue becomes you don't have to look out not just for the common use case but also the less common ones too (though for the occasional road trip, renting a vehicle with more range might be a good option).

@johnmcaraher Sure, hybrids definitely deserve a seat in the discussion and maybe that's the point. They seem to make sense to me. I just think Louis is more addresses the "pure EV" people.

@johnmcaraher I do remember hearing that some Prius people were basically doing the same thing, even though it wasn't officially supported. Though I believe the battery is much smaller?
