If you removed that component from the computer, you might actually be in trouble since you then took it from a working condition to a non-working one. When I take my car in for work and it's clear it will probably need some, they'll typically ask me to agree to any work up to a certain amount (and within the scope of the work requested) without requiring approval since, as for your example, it's often easier and cheaper to be able to do work during the investigative phase. The Tesla situation is a little different to that in key ways but I'd say it's similar enough that it's a douche move on their part. Somehow I ended up with a Kindle with the ads disabled even though I paid for ad supported. Probably they just didn't notice but it's never been "fixed" but it has made me consider going for that option on my next one.
