This is apparently a common thing with gyms. They'll also send debt collectors after you if you miss a payment. Be careful out there. If the collection agencies do come after you, check your local laws. In many states, uncollected debt expires (by law) after so many years.

Most people only expect a certain level of scuminess from businesses they are dealing with. It seems (some) gyms have decided that they're going to take advantage of that. It probably speaks to the business model of gyms which is where people join for aspirational reasons but then largely don't turn up.

@bufordmaddogtannen Yes, can confirm. I was working on applications for mobile phone Companies that pulled your credit score (actually a little more involved than that) in the UK back in 1998.
