  4. Just bought a new TV. Samsung dismissed out-of-hand. I think there should be a bounty on being able to flash open firmware to some TV. I'm pretty sure it doesn't actually have to be that fancy, the HDMI decoding is handled elsewhere.

  6. Newer Google TV devices have a TV only mode. I haven't been able to try it for long but it seems to work fairly OK, booting up to the last input (not sure if it does that in non TV only mode). It seems to have the streaming apps still enabled so not sure all the differences. I use an external Android TV box anyway so not really interested in what the TV does beyond being a monitor.
