I can recommend refillable cartridges if you can get em. Worth researching before you buy a printer. Mine report to the printer like the official ones but will "reset" if removed from the printer when indicating empty.

To be fair, I have an Epson that I use occasionally and when the ink dries in the nozzles, it's a pain to get them clear and I killed a set of cartridges trying to get it to come clean (used about 1/10 per clean). I've ended up buying a kit that lets you push cleaning fluid through the nozzles which is a lot cheaper. I keep meaning to set up a schedule to print something every couple of weeks but haven't got it set up yet. The real lesson is to avoid inkjets if possible. I have a cheap Brother B&W laser I use most of the time and it never lets me down.

Between reliable lasers, photo printing services and full printing services, the real market for inkjets is definitely small and niche. I would say that a rule of thumb is that if you're buying a cheap one, you probably don't need it.

Wow, doing it in the first place is bad but doing it after an update? That's tantamount to stealing. I think we need to find a decent quality printer and come up with a community firmware for it.

I also bought some cartridges that are refillable and reset when they are empty. I highly recommend them.

I was thinking it might be cool to pick a decent quality printer and come up with a community firmware for it. Just have it ignore the cartridge level. I do have some cartridges that reset once they are empty (you just have to remove them from the printer once). So they are available, for some printers at least.

Haven't bought a Canon printer in a long time. I'm liking Brother lasers mostly these days. Though they're all at the scamming.

@uraldamasis6887 Sinclair ZX Printer did it back in the day. It needed metalized paper though.

@truckerzachbell I considered going with those but decided it would be better to have the cartridges dry out than the bottles if I didn't use it for a while.

PC Load Letter? What the fuck does that mean?

You can get kits that do that for a few printers. I opted to go for refillable cartridges for mine though.

I don't think that's worked on any modern printer for a while. They're even getting into cryptography now (and the refillable cartridge sellers are still breaking it).

Another fun thing is that, at least on my Epson printer, running a cleaning cycle uses about 1/10th of the cartridge (and doesn't always work). Found this out after burning through a complete set of cartridges one time. Ended up buying a cleaning kit (which uses cheap cleaning fluid and not precious, precious ink) and refillable cartridges.

@Fiyaaaahh Well, you could just do that with the original starter cartridges. It's all more faff than it should be though.
