  1. It's kinda 50/50. You can still use the hardware, you just don't get updates. Where do you draw the line at updates? Not sure but there's a reason I prefer open source.

  2.  @radtronic  Yup. I just replaced the battery in my ratty old chromebook a few months ago. Still works fine for my purposes. I only replaced the one it superceded because the new one can run Android and Linux apps.
