It happened to 1984 too. Amazon put out an unlicensed version of the book and then removed it from peoples' devices.

You won't be able to download them from USB going forward though. They're not stopping loading through USB as far as I'm aware (though I'm sure it's coming).

The accounts for different things are so intertwined now too that it's quite possible that it could have far-reaching repercussions. One badly interpreted youtube comment could get an account banned which with cloud services, hosting, gmail etc, could take down a whole business. I think Amazon is a little bit less broad but there's still plenty that could go wrong (they own Twitch, AWS and probably a bunch of other services I'm not even aware of).

@ Sorry if I wasn't clear. I'm not saying that you're doing the wrong thing, I'm saying that that's the option that's going away so you won't be able to do that anymore.

I rarely bought Amazon books because I saw something like this coming. I did remove DRM to have a local copy but it's become harder over the years and presumably this is the closing the final loophole (still a shitty move though). I do still have a kindle 1 FWIW. Still works just fine and the keyboard was a nice feature at the time. I think they had bigger plans for it.

@ Correct. That's all it is this time. But Amazon has been restricting things over time. You used to be able to copy the documents from the device and remove the DRM and you used to be able to add your own songs to Amazon Music. None of this is direct evidence they will do that, of course so it's up to you to decide how likely it is.

Louis, when you download the book, it will have DRM. (I believe the big deal for many was it was easy to remove the DRM from it - at one time that was possible for books on the device too). It may be not allowing you to download the book because it cannot apply DRM for a device (because you don't have any). (As an aside, you might be able to get the PC reader working under wine or proton).
