I had an odd slightly-difference experience. I'd previously bought a car from a certain type of car dealer and a few years later told him that I was looking a new (used) car and specifically what I was looking for and he said he'd get back to me. Very shortly after I saw he'd put exactly that car up on ebay. I contacted him by email and we did the trade offline but I couldn't understand why he'd want to throw away money like that.

It seems like it might be worth small online retailers could gather together to have an online storefront that is a bit Amazon-like but doesn't put money in Bezos' pocket. It would take several years to become established though.
