I had a few SSDs that just stopped working. That was fairly early days and I've heard they've improved things but the state of affairs is that with SSDs, you have to be prepared to lose everything at any instant. This can also occur with spinning hard-drives, of course but gradual failure is the more common experience.

Yeah, all brands seem to go through their bad patches. Perhaps Seagate more than others.

@CDWCAULDRON In theory, they should be able to use some parity to make SSDs more robust and have more warning of failure.

The way I do things is to keep a relatively small SSD for boot and stuff I'm working on and a large spinning hard-drive for rarely used data. The SSD gets backed up to the spinning hard drive periodically. The spinning hard-drive gets backed up to an external drive. This isn't as good an option for a laptop for obvious reasons.

@christykail3314 I wasn't too happy with WD after their recent secret shingling escapade so I bought some ironwolfs. OK so far. One has had a link error but checked out fine after I pulled it so I think it's just a bad sata cable.

@SirReptitious Similar but different.

@muizzsiddique I do but these were not in my personal machines. OSs are getting a bit better at these things but you'd have to set up something like smartmond back then. I'm not sure it would have warned of these failures in any case.

@cjay2 Had good luck with Toshibas and Hitachis. I'm not sure if they're relabelled.
