  1. Is there any way you can get hold of previous tenants and ask them how their interactions with the landlords were? Perhaps there could be a website for that. Maybe an Alan thing.

  2. Have your building owners not offered to buy you out? Perhaps you should make them an offer. (Subject to you finding a new place).

  3. Might be worth seeing if guy-who-knows-a-guy would cut a few less corners for a bit extra money. He's more likely to be flexible up than the other guys be flexible down.
