  1. Perhaps instead of maintaining a continuous pulse, generate a vacuum pulse (which should travel at the speed of sound I think). Though that would tend to disperse (soliton wave?) and would generate even more stresses on the walls so perhaps not. +Johnny Farmfield, with the right setup, you could generate the push-pull locally to the pod itself. Pull as the pod approaches and push once it's past. I think that would likely be even less efficient than direct drive though. +Antares Maelstrom, I get your point but I think Concorde is a bad example to pull for things being safe against things being thrown up from the ground. :) Just a nitpick. For those criticizing the idea of underground tubes because of rescue requirements, the channel tunnel is 30 miles long and underwater and people use that every day. Add an escape hatch every 10 miles and you're already doing better. Of course, it's in fairly stable conditions and not California.
