  1. Greed is to blame for a lot of these things for sure but a lot of stuff is also driven by government regulations. Pollution and safety regulations can drive complexity, expense and weight at the cost of fuel economy and then economy regulations push reduced weight (where it matters) and reduced durability and so on. Some level of regulation makes sense but the auto-industry is definitely over-regulated.
