  1.  @David-lr2vi  When you're engine braking, the clutch is engaged and not wearing. 300,000 miles and the main issue with my gearbox is 1st is a little tricky these days.

  2. Probably not desirable from a safety perspective. Being out of sync makes individual vehicles stand out.

  3.  @alakani  Interesting. I changed the fluid recently (it said fluid was lifetime but probably not a good idea) and hoped that would help but it didn't.

  5.  @alakani  It's a VW. Clutch might be worth a try. It's been 180k abouts since I changed the clutch. Truth is though that it's an old car and I should probably replace it before much longer anyway.

  8. You can get solid state flashing devices which don't require an additional ground pin. I assume they use capacitors to keep the circuit working while the current isn't flowing or maybe just work with very low voltages.
