  1. Ah, I wondered what that noise was. It sounds somewhat like when the capacitor is no good and the motor is having trouble spinning up. That's actually a load off my mind.

  2. I had a dual washer/dryer that had a heat pump dryer and a load of clothes would take so long that we ended up buying an additional dryer just so we could keep up.

  3. My thermostat will switch over to gas if it detects the temperature is low enough via the internet (which is obviously a little bit questionable but seems to work well). There is also an option to install a module in the furnace which will switch over if it detects the temperature is low enough directly. (It's a package unit so the whole shebang is located outside). Just out of interest, I ran a test and the gas seems to blow with a temperature differential of about twice what the heat pump does. Not that that's a down on the heat pump as long as it keeps up.
