@keiyakins It's a big reason my home is a lot less smart than it would be.

@AaronOfMpls I haven't seen an iron with a power switch yet (in theory, you might be able to turn the thermostat all the way down). Though it is fairly pointless, it can be handy. You can buy inline power switches in the US. Personally, I think it should be up to the consumer to decide. No argument needed then. I do wish you could buy dual US outlets with power switches as I have a couple of use cases.

While it's not a rule, ungrounded tends to be used for lower power things like lights so it could be a way to discourage using high current appliances.

@swytchyglytch It's mostly just cost saving, I think. The way I understand it, things which are "double insulated" don't require a ground.

@TechnologyConnections It's one of those things that's not really necessary but useful sometimes. Which is to say it's something that should be decided by the consumer. I was actually fairly disappointed when I went looking for duplex outlets with switches a while back and couldn't find them. I think you'll be surprised at how much stuff doesn't come with switches if you look. Especially anything that is powered by a wall-wart which will still draw power when the item is off (if it even has an off). You can always unplug but now you have something which has to be put away (or have something done with it or be left untidily on the floor).
