@sixty-six No. Card payments can be made offline and transmitted at a later time. They won't be able to do the pre-charge though so they may limit how much you can pump.

One thing to bear in mind is that the throughput for gas pumps will likely be a lot higher for the forseeable future so costs will easier to justify (though trashcans, fair enough). The canopy makes sense too because people are basically outside the whole time they're filling where for an EV, you'd basically only be outside long enough to plug in and it wouldn't being used the rest of the charging cycle. Though with that said, I think solar powered canopies could be good for many parking spaces even without charging.

I think it's an infrastructure and usage thing. There aren't enough electric car drivers to justify something that big. The networks out there apparently can't afford to keep their current chargers in good condition. Tesla has a vested interest in keeping theirs working as their car business requires a reliable charging network.

@jaysmith1408 With lot lizards?

@volkris I agree. It's the sign of a company not doing so well. Potentially in a death spiral. Either that or one that has captive audience and could do with some competition. So this change should show which.

It's pricey but be careful calling it gouging. Lower prices could make the charger not profitable and they'd just take it away completely. Remember it's early days and you chose to be an early adopter.

@michaeldemanche4162 Or maybe you get out of the driver's seat and your spouse/friend/whoever takes a spell driving for a while. We used to do a long stop for lunch when driving on vacation but it turned the whole trip from being just long into being annoying and getting to the destination past midnight and making the next day less enjoyable. Not every trip will be that way for people, of course but time not spent enjoying your time off shouldn't be discounted.

@josephvanas6352 It can depend. I once did similar when American Airlines stranded me in Louisiana and I was fine at the end but it was all interstate and light traffic. On the flipside, I've done trips of a few hours and been frazzled at the end of it.

@MereMeerkat Maybe. I haven't paid cash in a long time. Usually if I can't use a card, I'll drive on and find another pump.
2
@seanm8560 Thought I'd heard of it happening. I can't recall specific details though.

Wireless charging is less efficient. Layer that on top of infrastructure not being sufficient currently and you won't see it being a big thing anytime soon.
2
@FabbrizioPlays You need the infrastructure for that. EVs require a lot of power. All a gas station needs is a big tank in the ground and a place where the filling truck can park.

Good point. I hate those jump cuts. They always make the speaker seem so insincere when there's a lot of them.

Depends on the campground. Some campgrounds have power at the campsites. The ones that don't, I don't think people would want them because they're there to get away from all that.

@stitchfinger7678 It depends how remote you get. There's places around here for rough camping that are not that far out but it would definitely reduce options. When I visited Death Valley, there were some places I had range anxiety with 3/4 of a tank with a gasser. An EV would certainly be an adventure.

Also the problem of companies that want to sell your data and don't have it.

Those extra pumps are there for peak use during rush hour. Removing them for a few EVs that are going to sit there for 30-60 minutes would be insane (dual-use off-peak might work but I can see issues there too). Most pumps at the bigger stations are double-sided too. It's only very small outdated ones where I've ever seen a pump only do one side at a time.

Can be a bit inconvenient if you have to queue a second time to get change though.

@AndersAstrand Cash can be kept for when needed and doesn't need connection to a network or even any power at all to work. Card is definitely more convenient but it's foolish not to recognize upsides cash can provide.

The machine could have a default cable and a socket for the car owner to put their own cable into.
