There was actually a deal with those in the UK where the pin that went in the ground could break off and hold the shutters on the live and neutral open, making the sockets more dangerous rather than less (the UK ones sockets being safe in the first place anyway).

@FowlerAskew Right angle plugs everywhere basically. The thing that kills microusb (both parts) the fastest is when a device being charged falls off and it lands on the cable.

@renakunisaki I agree. Though if I'm using them just for 5V, there are some through-hole sockets available. Mini-USB is becoming rarer though micro-USB is soon to follow.

Hotel sockets can be worn enough to where it's difficult (and likely dangerous) to get plugs to stay in.

@mildlydispleased3221 I've seen a design for a UK plug that folds smaller for travel. Unfortunately, I've not seen it in the wild. That would certainly help with a lot of the complaints.

Haveta say, disappointed at no Electroboom reference. Especially after the recent one for you from Steve Mould.

The early BS standards for UK plugs were two-pin rounded. They weren't very safe though. BS372 even was 90 degree with a 45 degree cord entry.

@codybohyer1107 From the horizontal/vertical. It's still parallel to the wall. Though 45s (to the wall) are sometimes used for recessed connections.

Everything you said but I do have one (1) two-prong extension cord with a 90/45 plug which expects the ground-up orientation. Of the score of plugs that have not been agnostic, all the rest have been designed for ground-pin-down.

@SmallSpoonBrigade It would make sense. Though it would add cost and some of these hotels were obviously shaving pennies.

@SmallSpoonBrigade What's least expensive is to do nothing and leave travelers with their plugs falling out of the sockets, unfortunately.

@mildlydispleased3221 Interesting. I've lived abroad for more than 20 years and haven't been back in about 5 so have missed those.
