  6. That's misleading. Our sailors were released from captivity from the Barbary pirates after being told the U.S. was not a Christian nation. I guess that was reaching out to Islam.

  7.  @tom1b1b8  The whole thing is complex. Jefferson paid a ransom of $60K to the Bashaw of Tripoli to end the war that had gone on for several years by then. I'm not aware of most of the details, but I believe the declaration that the U.S. was not a Christian nation played a part in ending the seizure of our ships. There's probably a fat book somewhere that will tell you more than you ever want to know about that episode in the early years of our country.
