Reagan didn't get elected by his screen cred, he got elected by the intervention of Geo HW Bush requesting that his Saudi cronies intervene in Iran when it was found out that they were going to release the American hostages they had held captive for 400+ days. Bush asked them to wait until after the election to release them. Had they done so before the election Carter would have been reelected. They consented and the hostages were released on the same day Reagan took office.
