One can give aid and comfort to enemies of the US in an attempt to do harm to the government at any time and still be charged with treason. Imprisonment and a fine are levied upon conviction. Congress may override a guilty verdict though.

Background checks, registration of weapons and requiring education in gun safety, the same way we deal with car ownership is what the Left has advocated, not abolishing the 2nd Amendment.
