@petroleumcrypt707 A late medieval Spaniard commenting on Norsemen he encountered said "They are the filthiest creatures on the face of the earth. They are constantly washing their faces and hands and they comb their hair everyday!"

@destinixshakur The Romans taught the Moors how to bathe.

As in ANY time in history, the clean people were clean and made every effort to stay that way. Dirty people were usually not in a situation where personal hygiene was easily accessible. Rich versus poor being the most predominant factor in keeping clean, although there are certainly instances of total neglect at the highest levels of society. Louis XIV was notorious for his lack of hygiene and use of perfume to cover it up.

@Utriedit215 Yes the Egyptians bathed. Millennia before there were even Greek colonies in Italy. My point wasn't so much about what the Romans did but that one culture wasn't responsible for teaching the other this or that thing before it was ever a popular concept. Ideas rose and fell along with the the dominance of any single political system. Nothing is so cut and dry as to credit everything about something as basic as hygiene to a single group. It's not gun powder, porcelain or a number system based on 10s.

@petroleumcrypt707 It was quoted to me decades ago by a friend who was a university professor and polyglot. The source may not have come from something written in English. It's priceless, isnt it?

@patricodesouza7453 The Vikings were clean AND socially progressive too. Women could represent their husbands in legal disputes during his absence.
