The Buddhist gods are there to protect us. Their powers are activated by our Buddhist practice. They don't need to be identified or assume any kind of form other than the manifestation of protection or to quickly resolve a dilemma.

"Buddha" is a life condition to be aspired to. Everyone has the potential to become a buddha. Shakyamuni Gautama is the name of the historical buddha. He was a real person, not a fantasy diety.

@wilberwhateley7569 Buddha is NOT a celestial being. "Heaven" is NOT "up there" in Buddhism. Neither does a buddha dismiss the character or illusive nature of others not yet awakened to the ultimate reality, but seeks to create value in his/her interaction with all others. The compassion of the Buddha is infinite.

@thethreeholybaskets4401 As small-minded as it sounds, that won't be necessary. I have been reciting the Lotus Sutra for over 55 years. The Buddha himself proclaimed that no other teaching out shone the Lotus Sutra. Nor would any teaching in the future supercede the Lotus Sutra. (Nirvana Sutra). The wonderful law of the Lotus Sutra is Shakyamuni's highest teaching and the ultimate reality.

@MarionFR You assume that cleaving to the One Great Law was closing my mind to other possibilities. It wasn't. It was discarding my shallow illusions and placing my faith in pursuing the ultimate reality, and it has paid in spades over nearly 60 years of practice.

@nganvo840 Totally unnecessary to study the transient teachings. Amitabha Buddha never appeared here in the real world. The purpose of Shakyamuni's advent was his behavior as a human being, not to beguile his listeners with tales of a supernatural entity living in a fantasy paradise beyond the stars. The vow of the Bodhisattvas of the earth is to prove the primacy of the Lotus Sutra and to spread it widely among the people.

@MarionFR Studying the transient teachings does not contribute to spiritual growth anymore than reading Marvel comics makes one versed in great Western literature.

@nganvo840 The title of the Lotus sutra is itself the power by which this bodhisattva (Perceiver of the World's Sounds, Eng.) is able to grant the wishes of those who call his name. The Wonderful Law of the Lotus Sutra encompasses all of the names and powers described in the sutra. It is the source of infinite benefit that can be had by anyone who praises the name of the sutra. Those who say its name will gain good fortune and perceive the ultimate reality.
