The middle class in the US at the turn of the 20th century was not as large and far reaching as it would become after WWII. The number of 2 bedroom 1 bath homes would stagger the imagination. Houses with 4-6 bedrooms weren't as common as one imagines based on what has survived after 120 years. Urban renewal wiped out 1000s of these small cheaply built low quality homes.

@Sleepingvampires Details that were considered to be the minimum requirement for a house in 1900 are unheard of today. I hope you can restore those lost elements of woodwork your home once had. Some things will be easier than others. Replacing a picture rail is not that difficult. A room divider with plinths and columns is not so easy. If there is an architectural salvage shop nearby, make it a regular stop even if you can't find or afford what you see or if they don't have what you need. Keep going back. Persistence will pay off in the long run. I live in a MCM house that has taken years to restore in better than new condition. Our efforts have launched any number of remodeling jobs and major repairs to the homes in our neighborhood.

@rg1649 Ah yes, a fellow inmate of the algorithm gulag. I'm walking on eggshells myself. They call it a "supervised" account.
