I use snow as a winter water source in Alaska
the snow at the top of the surface is very light and airy so a 5-gallon bucket of surface snow will end up being only a couple inches of water
The snow under the surface is compressed, no air- you'll get more water out of 1 cup of compressed snow, than one cup of surface light airy snow
And they'll be less fresh bird turds in the surface.
๐
the trick is to melt it a little at a time.
Melt a small amount, bring it to a boil, and use the boiling water to melt more snow
It will be quicker, you'll use less BTUs/heat... The boiling water will start the sanitizing process immediately.
stop adding snow, bring it to a full boil for 10 minutes, and it should be potable -I'll sometimes use snow water for coffee, so it goes through a filter... You may want a filter. I've also use a Brita pitcher for the boiled water at camp.
In a survival situation, you'll have to eat the bug legs!
Overall, when in survival mode, we think in terms of conserving our resources
Example -when using propane stove, I don't cook spaghetti, but angel hair pasta cuz it's done in no time
Less BTUs
So there's a few tips on melting snow to use for potable water... I'm still alive so it must work!
But I'm just an idiot on YouTube-this is your health and your survival-do some more research so you know. Maybe someone else has a better tip.
I'm not trying to sell you anything.
I don't care for groundwater in most places
Using rainwater, snow water, most spring water - Your hair and skin will thank you!

I agree with you. I could go down a long list of dangerous things this guy has done in this video-but he's basically a kid camping in his backyard
To be fair, he states in his description he is not an expert.
Yet, based on the questions I'm seeing- many folks do not read video descriptions.
He's having a good time-it is what it is. But this is definitely not "survival" techniques
FYI- the FIRST thing you do is gather firewood- 3x times what you think you need.
fire & water first
You're out of the woods & back at camp 60-90 minutes before dark, depending on weather, because anything can go wrong
Yet, there is something to survival of the fittest... If something like a Peps froze out in the woods trying something like this? that may not be a big deal. But peps is justa wannabe YouTuber thinking they know something.
Hello from alaska-can't wait to see the next set of idiots that try to feed dandelions to moose, or clean their fish down by the cabins so they can post photos of a moose kicking their asses and bears coming in where they don't belong,on their freak book pages
Of course the tourists don't come armed with anything more than smartphones - so we got to keep one loaded when they are around
They don't tether their dogs, thinking they're trained, Their dogs get loose, the K9 instincts kick in and and they start heading out to the woods, I got to grab the ATV and my Malamute to go track em down before they become food for the woods
Then back where I used to live in New England, you'd have the idiot hikers in tank tops and shorts hiking up a few thousand feet altitude where it's below freezing
A friend of mine had to build a warming Hut cuz they were knocking on his door 24/7 freezing their asses off. The man couldn't get a moment's Peace so he built them a little hut so they would leave him the hell alone!
Of course they didn't! They all wanted a ride back down the mountain hahaha!
Then when I'm living off grid, there's always some new fool that needs firewood or something by February because they didn't stock up and can't get any more firewood in...
we're the ones that have to deal with it ๐
Although it was amusing last winter watching my idiot big bully Alabama neighbor sliding all over Alaska ice-never heard of ice claws
I gave him a pair, now I got nothing to laugh at.
Other than a Alabama boy driving around stoned trying to plow snow -
oh... With his kid in the truck.

When it's dry air Sub-Zero here in Alaska, I scoot in and out in my bare feet to grab wood, split kindling, deal with the dawg
It's very dry air
And
Dry snow.
A lot of Canadians & alaskans where I live, are used to cold temperatures, out there in t-shirts and sneakers at 0ยฐ F
We don't like it much above 65ยฐ. The human body adjusts to climates, also why we should be eating local food which is designed to be eaten in those climates
The other factor is when strong winter sun hits buildings, they go from 10ยฐ to 70ยฐ in an hour
when the Sun goes down, then it gets nasty cold.
So he was probably okay while the sun was out, and that's why the first thing you do is gather your firewood, not do it 60-90 minutes before sunset
But the snow is bone dry at Sub-Zero-36ยฐ. There's no moisture.
-36ยฐ wind is a lot different than the weather in the video.
So I do believe it could've reached -36ยฐ sometime at night, when the sun was down for many hours
but not -36ยฐ while he was preparing camp
It's strange - the coldest hours in Alaska, is when the sun is coming up.
In the wintertime, it's high noon around 1:30-2 pm
The warmest part of the day is late afternoon 3-5 pm
I'm originally from the Northeast, I've covered a lot of countries in a few continents, in desert cities, but this daily temperature pattern is strange.
Difficult to adjust when you're used to getting up and out in the morning
So we're dealing with a lot of variables different than the continental USA
And that's why Flatlanders should never be deciding our environmental policy.
Cuz they don't understand, the rest of world functions differently away from their narcissistic lives
