If anyone is truly concerned about the polls, it is easy to buy a list of 1k telephone numbers or even 5k telephone numbers of voters from around the country and it is fairly easy to distribute portions of that list along with polling questions and a script to a group of 50 to 100 volunteers to conduct a poll. I did just such a poll in an afternoon for a grassroots congressional campaign with volunteers. The results were spot on with the actual election results and we only polled about 1 month ahead of the election.

Alex Fitzgerald the only reason the campaign I helped with in 2016 conducted its own volunteer poll was because no one had conducted any polls in the three way Congressional race. 2 years earlier the Green Party candidate I helped had earned 11% of the vote more than any other Green Party Congressional candidate anywhere had earned to that point, but he was a great candidate -a long time community activist and business owner and a long time friend of Ralph Nader who Ralph personally endorsed and campaigned for -if you look into how often Ralph does that you will find out just how rare a candidate he was but anyhow, every other upstate NY congressional race bordering the largest district east of the Mississippi had been polled, but not ours. We gathered the numbers and got 20 volunteers together to call on their cell phones using a one page script and answer sheet for recording the answers. It took about 4 hours to make the calls and tally the results with people who had never done polling before. The hard part at that point was getting the numbers and cross indexing the voter list for a random sample, but a few months later I learned where I could get the polling sample and numbers cheap through I think Aristotle is the name of the company that does voter information lists like that, and it would have saved a lot of time. It took me a week to compile information I could get from that company’s voter database in a couple of minutes. It took me about a half hour to write the script for the poll callers and the answer sheet to record their answers. Honestly with volunteers campaigns could conduct such polls for almost no money. We did. Traditional polling firms charge tens of thousands of dollars for such polls.

John Meyer most polls are landline only because an even more restrictive set of rules regarding unsolicited calls to mobile phones than the Do Not Call list regulations for landlines apply to cell phones. If you are in the do not call list as a landline pollsters and political campaigns can still legally call you. If you are in the do not call list as a cell phone even auto dialers with real people on the line, let alone full on robocalls are not allowed to be used.

  5. I’m 43 and if Sanders had decided to run as an independent in 2012 he would have had my vote. If Sanders somehow wins the Democratic nomination he will likely get my vote. If anyone else is the Democratic nominee likely Green Party nominee Howie Hawkins will get my vote because Howie was to the left of Bernie when he helped him run for US Senate in the 1970s on the Liberty Union Party line and he is still to the left of Bernie.
