Putin was a hard line KGB operative in the late 1980s and he knows that the US with the help of the Saudis bankrupted the Soviet Union by cratering oil prices which limited Soviet access to hard capital which prevented them from trading for goods they needed which caused their economic problems. Russia eliminated it's national debt during the last decade and really has the Saudis over a barrel. If Russia keeps dumping oil on the market the Saudis will be paying their 20% GDP national debt and $27 Billion owed by Aramaco back with deflated petrodollars. This creates an incentive for the Saudis to price oil in Euros and end petrodollar hegemony which will kill the US dollar's status as the world's reserve currency. If that happens hyperinflation a la Argentina in the 1970s and 1980s hits the US economy in the middle of what could be a depression and we are bankrupt with $30 Trillion in National Debt. Russia is in the cat bird seat right now and prepared to get revenge for what we did to the Soviet Union with the help of the Saudis in the 1980s and 1990s.
