In South Korea which deployed extensive testing to contain the virus, there were only 8400 cases and only 80 deaths that is a 0.9% death rate and they stopped it without shuttering their economy. In Germany they have done extensive testing and while they used a shut down, they have had only about a 0.26% death rate with almost 20k cases. In NY we have deployed extensive testing too and while we have the most cases, just s 0.49% death rate so far. All three high test areas have shown that the severe case rate is about 1/10th what it has been in low tested societies and the death rate is 1/20 to 1/4 what it has been on the rest of the planet where non-extensive testing has been used. Is it bad? Yes, but South Korea proved that if Trump ordered the testing kits in January and deployed the containment procedures that Bush did during SARS it is likely we would have been able to easily contain this virus. Most people have had mild cases more like 98% than the original reported 80%.
