There's a different theory I think is a bit more likely which has FDR and Churchill working together despite the neutrality act to goad Japan into commiting an overt act of war to justify entering the war. E.g. denying exports of resources to Japan along with the British. And the sinking of the Lusitania is what you get when you conduct business with foreign countries that are at war, the mistake there was letting those companies trick the government into being their protection similar to the Barbery wars.

You get weaker the more territory you conquer and Germany was unable to take Brittany so Hitler gave up and went after Russia which sealed his fate, he didn't learn from Napoleon. And Pearl Harbor is not when the US joined the war, the US joined the war when they started sanctioning Japan, sent the Flying Tigers to China, moved the B-17 factory to the Philippines, and made a deal with Churchill to defend Brittany despite the Neutrality Act which was in effect. All of that happened before Pearl Harbor.

I haven't heard about the train lines bit but from what I've read basically the newly formed Germany empire was simply following the British and French empires example of stealing land, except this time it was being stolen from people who already stole it. When the US involved itself is when it became a world war, until the happened it was simple business as usual for the Europes nations.
