  1. The Arab land owners ( plantations ) in Mandate Palestine and their socioeconomic group lived mostly in Damascus, Beirut and some in Cairo. Their reference point was never Jerusalem or Yaffo.  Israel around 1920 was a mostly rural/wild nation with no infrastructure. No paved roads, no electricity, maybe a book shop in Jerusalem. When middle class Arabs wanted to go shopping they had to travel to Beirut or Damascus to buy say a car or a camera.  there are fascinating photographs in the Library of congress and in a German archive of the land at this time. The German Imperial Air Force photographed large parts of Israel from the air. It was the Yishuv , of course, who brought a new economy to the Mandate and started creating jobs. These jobs enabled Arabs from Iraq, Egypt etc to migrate to the Mandate. The British built a few match stick factories and had a uniform making factory in Yaffo/South TLV.
