This is a person who believes it because it is a pleasant belief, and there are no immediate dangers emerging from this belief that would otherwise force their mind to accept reality, but since they exist in a relatively harmless environment, their mind is capable of suspending belief and taking in ideas that are comfortable and self-aggrandizing, even if they are baseless and hearsay. They wouldn't just as easily, believe on a busy highway, that no cars will hit them if they cross it blindly because an angel is watching over them. It's simple existential escapism.
