Russia does not ban being gay. The President has said this many times. The old law banned the promotion of homosexuality to children in schools which I think is similar to what DeSantis did in Florida and most republicans support. What the new law does is criminalise ALPHABET organisations. This is in line with the monitoring of toxic anti democratic NGO groups. Similar sentiment is present in Hungary, Serbia, Belarus and will become more common as the European elections bring more and more Conservative governments to power. Most Europeans, including Russians were OK with the LGB community but as more letters were added and a bizarre interest in our children emerged the pushback has become more determined.
