  1. 18 years in Law Enforcement, it's hard to shut down the chase or a fight when it stops suddenly. The best way to approach that job is to leave your ego at home and focus on thinking things out. Too many cops focus on controlling others in the situation and not enough on controlling themselves.

  3. That can be a super bad idea. Red flags pop up the moment a driver resists pulling over. In the mind of the cop it's buying time to maybe get a weapon, find a way to escape or even just prepare for a fight. A perfectly calm agreable officer will be on edge when an automobile doesn't stop immediately. Choosing not to stop can result in additional charged such as flight to avoid arrest and resisting arrest. Statistically you will be much safer and avoid a confrontation by complying from the beginning.

  4.  @sarah.j.777  No not really in fact if you approach with a calm demeanor you give them an out. Never take someone's dignity then expect them to cooperate. I worked mostly alone the key was to give the sense that I was relaxed and easy to get along with as long as you did what I asked. Eye contact and command presence (not demand presence) made people feel it was easy and the only option to follow my "requests". On the occasional noncompliance staying only one level of force or aggression ahead allowed the subject to back down giving them a sense that backing down was the best option they had.

  5.  @philcollins2546  I hate to Monday morning quarterback this but once the suspect stopped driving the threat was neutralized and unless there was reason to believe the suspect was armed the whole thing needed to deescalate.

  26. With thousands of stops under my belt people who don't immediately pull over put me on edge, additional factors might increase that apprehension. This whole thing was an overreaction that continued because the police misread the stop, better police officers could shift down to a lower threat level when it was obvious the driver was not trying to escalate the situation. There is a lot of training involving how to respond to an increasing threat level but almost none on backing down to match the situation as it de-escalates. On the other hand pulling over immediately and complying with all directions probably would have resulted in a field interview and a friendly chat.

  27. Assault on a police officer and resisting arrest are clearly defined by case laws in the area in question. Where I'm at the officer has to have actual injuries and in other areas looking sideways at a cop is assault. During my career in a situation like this one, I would approach from a non-official angle and attempt some friendly dialogue if it wasn't reciprocated and an actual crime wasn't being investigated then let it go.
