  60. MET-TECH LLC Consumers pay ALL corporate taxes. So if you raise taxes on oil the poor man filling his tank pays , if you raise taxes on WalMart the single mother pays more for food and clothing. Does that sound unfair?????? Who would you enslave to get your oil and WalMart goods from, because it takes people and organizations of people (corporations) to voluntarily do the work to bring consumers competitive prices on the things they need.   Capitalism is good, crony capitalism is what WE have and it's not good. Government control is at an all time high and things keep getting less affordable and less efficient. The Idiots took over our Health Care and can't even run a website. obamacare is so inept they can't run a website, you can't keep your doctor and you didn't save anything. My plan was cancelled , my doctor and clinic left town and my current benefits are much less. Yes some people will benefit but it's only because government throws money at them to subsidize their welfare healthcare.  You talk about the progressive tax structure burdening the lower class, LIES. Almost all the people I know in the lower middle class not only DON'T PAY INCOME TAXES but they get money back called EIC. My guess if your young and haven't had many tax returns yet. I am upper middle class and I've paid up to $60k a year on taxes , I own a business and the last thing I want is any help from the worthless incompetent wasteful government.  Don't think government is too big ? Start with paying your share of the 17 trillion dollar debt. Try critical thinking instead of regurgitating emotional non-logic.

  124. iamihop Yea you're right I think it's way too polarized, however I believe if government followed the Constitution we wouldn't have most the problems we do. Quite frankly I'm sick of the news every day centering around government. It's hollywood for the ugly and untalented. This I guarantee you, the more power Washington gets the worse things will be. I believe in a strong society and safety net but putting government at the center of it is like the inmates running the asylum. Their only answer is to give them more and they will make it better.  I have a plan, let's turn Washington into a museum, send the politicians back to their constituents where they can do their jobs online for everyone to see, away from lobbyists and surrounded by the people they are supposed to represent.  They will only make the average of their constituents salary AND NO Retirement. After two terms they go back to where they came from true public servants as it was meant to be.  The IRS replaced by a flat national sales tax so everyone has "skin" in the game. No more printing and borrowing money, if the economy is truly good, government will benefit too, if it's bad they will have plenty of motivation to get off their asses to come up with a real fix.  No more omnibus bills full of pork and goodies , passing a law will be specific to only that law not bribes for representatives on the fence.  Laws claiming to "help" people will be judged every year on their merits. Funding will be cut to any not meeting standards.  Funding to any bureaucratic alpha bet departments (HHS, DHS, EPA etc etc) sunsets every year and is subject to a positive reinstatement by Congress. The Constitution never gave authority with the force of law to any unelected bureaucracy. Missing money such as billions unaccounted for will be dealt with by those who were  supposed to be in charge of it incarcerated until every last cent is accounted for.  etc etc Just a few of my own thoughts.

  309. iamihop I like the way you are not polarized and blindly accepting this one side or the other position. Some of my strongest belief's have changed over the years. I think most political disagreements stem from what people believe and not what the history and evidence shows. Each generation thinks they are nuanced and different from old fashioned notions and they can overcome the human nature of the past.  I believe in a melting pot too, however what I see is multiculturalism which is the opposite of a melting pot. I have nothing against other cultures but when they stop assimilating and start demanding to be recognized as a group at odds with other Americans I cannot support them. Open borders in a welfare state is national suicide. I believe immigrants should not be a burden on tax payers, they should assimilate while honoring the culture they came from. We both know there are examples of hard working immigrants who have been taken advantage of but there also immigrants who live off of welfare and pass this attitude down to their children. We don't have to be the image of a 1950's nuclear family but everyone pulling their own weight (if they can) and being a net positive to the economy is welcome to any community.  When it comes to government remember it is a group of people who control the rest of the people. They are supposed to be bound by the Constitution so our Freedoms are protected. The Constitution is there to protect us from government and I'm afraid people think it's government that protects their freedom. At this point the government has become so big ,it is in the business of protecting it's own power and we, with our rights, are a threat to their unlimited power.   The alphabet bureaucracies tend to over regulate and complicate. I would have the FDA and EPA as advisory offices to the Congress, there would be no more regulations only Laws created by Congress as the Constitution allows. I know you're a lot younger than me so you wouldn't remember the dirty 70's. People used to toss their trash on the highways and big business polluted without regard to the environment. Pressure was brought to bare and the country really cleaned up it's act. Like any movement it swung hard to the left and production by industry is almost a memory now. I remember working at the local factory building farm equipment to be shipped to China. Hundreds of people worked there, for the last thirty years the rusting old buildings serve as a reminder that we don't manufacture much anymore. The overregulation has chased much of business overseas.  Keep up the independent thinking we need less sheeple in this world.

  322. Tiffian Ruler You are wayyyyy out there . Freedom and economic egalitarianism are polar opposites. Your type of liberalism requires the theft of property and labor to benefit those who don't produce in society. Punish the successful and reward the lazy and ignorant is the basic premise for every liberal position.  Your liberalism is an oxymoron you want to use National government force to force people into unions, Then you claim you want workers to have freedom ????  As far as illegal aliens, I pay my highly skilled American contractors up to 12K a week. You should be concerned about the American children in schools getting the diseases being brought in right now. I am concerned about the American teenager trying to get his first job and having to compete with grown men and women flipping burgers. I am concerned about Americans footing the bill for all the welfare being spent on these illegal foreigners. Two of my best friends are naturalized citizens, one is Russian and the other is Cuban. They are very intelligent highly motivated people and they both agree with me, they also own their own businesses. AND they BOTH speak ENGLISH.  America has never been perfect but with time the wrongs are righted. It was the Republican party that ended slavery . It was the Republican party that passed civil rights. MLK was a registered Republican. And yet who is always accused of racism ??? If you don't like group think then why would you advocate for socialism which is the essence of group think.

  418. zaxx19 Assumptions and contradictions, you mock "public servants" and praise those parasites who won't work and live off the tax dollar, hypocrisy . Liberals love to group people "you guys" "brown people" "rich people" "poor people"etc etc. Your racist leanings blind you to what is good and right about America. Once we start dividing ourselves as Black Americans, White Americans , Mexican Americans etc. it creates division and strife. America as it was intended is supposed to be a melting pot so my black neighbor would feel more bonded to me and our city than another person with the same skin color a thousand miles away. And I would feel the same way about injustice against a person of different color anywhere especially a fellow American.  For the past decade I've owned my own business, pay my contractors up to $12,000 a week, worth every penny to our customers. I believe economics should always be viewed from  the consumer's point of view. If a person is valuable to society they will be paid accordingly in a free market encouraging more to be valuable. Our system of crony capitalism, corrupt unions, and outrageous lawsuits is a disservice to consumers and the working man and woman.  You mention education and I agree everyone should have a good publicly funded basic education. The bureaucratic mess we have now is more about politicians and teachers unions than educating children. I advocate for a voucher system and open free market private schools like colleges. Parents of poor children could send their children to any school of their choosing and competition would ensure a results oriented program judged by local and national testing. The last thing I want is poor children staying uneducated.  Higher Education should be more affordable not subsidized. I liked the college atmosphere and traditions but that is not education. Weekend and online courses should be encouraged by potential employers , maybe some sort of sponsorship system encouraged by tax breaks.  Finally on immigration, legal immigration. Shouldn't new immigrants  be productive members of society, valuable to American consumers filling a need and purpose in return for self esteem and cohesiveness to their new chosen society?  I don't care what color you are or where you came from if your going to be an American then be an American, be productive and valuable to your community. "Judge others by the content of their character not the color of their skin."  MLK

  450. Craig Smith I like philosophy as much as the next guy and I understand why people believe in religion and a system of government and cooperation that seems fair and just. In practice is where we see the failures of such government systems.  "Communisms goal is to kill off the government completely and live in a governmentless society as well as a classless society. " I think your confusing Communism with Marxism but in every Communist experiment we know, the force of government is the only thing that keeps it together including borders that keep people in as well as out. The only fairness in Communism is equal misery for the non-government class. I know because I have friends from Russia and Cuba.  My "ignorance" of the dream, pales in comparison to your ignorance of the practice, history and reality . This is an elemental difference between liberals and conservatives.I don't think all liberals are mindless emotional machines nor do I believe all conservatives are brilliant . I think we can agree that more government is less freedom. I would rather have Freedom and the responsibility to take care of myself and help my neighbors voluntarily than live in a cell block of fairness and equality defined by government. Take my advice , stop looking through rose colored glasses and examine the results of these experiments . Forget all the "good" intents. Take your own advice and read about the other side of these philosophies, I recommend "Liberty and Tyranny" by Mark Levin, a very serious historian. This is the most comprehensive book on anything I've ever read.

  452. atlas42185 What percentage of your life is spent earning money to pay taxes ????? I'll bet you don't even pay income taxes as a lot of people don't. I could have bought a real  nice house with the taxes I've paid in the last 5 years.  My young idealist, government spending has dramatically increased in the last 15 years and that is the reason for the huge debt, google it.  While you are at it google welfare fraud and government waste in general. It's not a myth, there is a grade school across the street from my shop in a low income area. Most of the children are met by parents (who should be at work) when they get out of school. These families are on welfare, about one third of them can't speak English.  The only myth is the one in your head. You pay tens of thousands of dollars in taxes every year and then come tell me taxes are too low.  I'll bet you want to raise taxes on corporations too. You fool, who do you think pays for those taxes ????? YOU DO !!!! The consumer pays all taxes. Shop at Wal-Mart or buy gasoline , you pay the taxes.  I read recently that the top 1 % of wage earners pay something like half of all the income taxes in this country. They also build business, products and employ many people. Lets just take more of their money, they will leave the country taking their businesses, products and jobs. It's already happening and when we've chased them all off this will be a 3rd world country. Your Santa Clause government won't have anything to offer anyone because it is also a welfare case depending on other people's money.

  456. Stephan Toth Knee jerk as I expected, now apply that to filthy rich. In the land of liberal group think all poor people are virtuous and anyone with means cheated someone else, this is the philosophy of the weak minded, shallow devoid of critical thinking and emotionally gutless. The truth always lays somewhere in-between where, there is definitely filthy rich and filthy poor. Those people are contemptible because of their character not their current financial status.  This type of social engineering (socialism) is counterproductive to lifting the poor out of their situation. By providing a means of living at no personal cost , the "poor" become comfortable and feel safe in their poverty. No longer exposed to intense motivation to better themselves they are happy with the status quo  and justified by people like you who replace the shame of being a burden on society with the honor of victim virtue.  Speaking of famous sayings,"The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. "Jesus never advocated for government solutions in fact Revelations equated governments of men with beasts. (yes I studied eschatology)  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (Republican) once said "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." Content of character is how we should judge people not by the money in their bank account.  Here is a thought, maybe the life we get is the life we deserve, karma..............

  787.  @chrisa.4937  Let's really discuss the basic physics of daytime heat energy transfer. So I'll stipulate that IR directly from the sun is mitigated by GHGs. In addition let's agree earth is radiating surface heat into space both day and night. So now we can concentrate on the mechanism of heat transfer to and from the lower atmosphere. As far as average global temperature is concerned that is completely dependent on the rate of energy transfer in each cycle (there is no static retention of heat only rate of gain and rate of loss). To understand it on the smallest level will disabuse one from making cause and effect assumptions on a bigger scale. So our source is higher energy radiation (light) that hits earth's surface. This is then (excluding photosynthesis and other chemical reactions) is converted to increasing kinetic molecular activity (temperature) on the surface. Warming surface temperatures are losing heat to conduction, subsurface earth and water, convection (kinetic activity in the atmosphere next to the surface and progressing vertically) and radiation (long wave infrared light). Here is a model I use to give one a subjective understanding. Picture a camp fire on a cold night. Standing not too close we can feel the radiation warm our skin absent most the convection that will increase by getting closer. Now at the same distance feel the heat directly above the fire. The reason it feels much hotter is the convective transfer is rising. The higher we go the more of that convective heat is absorbed by cooler surrounding air. If you don't have any major issues at this point we can continue to the next step.

  788.  @chrisa.4937  The reason for understanding each process is to have a complete cause and effect ground we can agree on. So a warming surface is radiating and convecting as our starting point here. To understand GHG's absorption and emission of IR will give us another part of the picture. Absorbtion and emission are equal for any given substance. So let's say a CO2 molecule is at an energy state lower than the surrounding radiation, this puts in a state of Absorption to receive energy equal to the surrounding radiation. That will increase it's temperature (kinetic molecular energy). It is now in a state of equilibrium with the surrounding level of radiation, and doesn't absorb more radiation. Since temperature is the average molecular kinetic energy of a system and CO2 cannot absorb more radiation than source emits, to continue warming the atmosphere the energy has to flow to a lower state such as a nitrogen or oxygen molecule and that happens during a convection event when the CO2 molecule bumps into a cooler nitrogen molecule. The nitrogen warms and the CO2 cools to a close state of temperature equilibrium (increasing entropy). Now the CO2 molecule is again at a lower energy state and may be able to absorb radiation again. (I said may because light can only be absorbed and emitted in specific levels ). So to increase atmospheric temperature the bulk of kinetic molecular energy has to increase, aka nitrogen and oxygen warming from surface convection and radiation that is absorbed and convected to those gases. I want to go on but I really want to be on the same page for the physics of what is happening. Remember Einstein once penned " to (really) know a thing is to be able to explain it in simple terms but no simpler".
