Remember TWA-800 ? Many witnesses observed a missile hit it. It went down , and no bodies were ever recovered. The military was doing some practicing in the vicinity and had checked with the ATC in the vicinity. They got cleared but the flight was late. A serious delay that did not get reported to these military guys and their war toys. Boeing was allowed to make up some story about explosive fuel, in the tank, under certain conditions...We had never observed such effect , anywhere but they got away with it and my personal observation is ; for taking the blame and allowing the military outfit to stay clean, in exchange for many contacts in their future. Maybe they got to feel omnipotent, as they could cut corners and get away with it. Who knows ? Seems that way.
